The Role of the ESP in Ed Reform Many of the education reforms being discussed and implemented in Delaware and across the country today have as great a potential impact on support staff as on teach- ing staff, if not more. Support pro- fessionals must position themselves to assert a clear voice in these dis- cussions, to shape the agenda, and to make the ESP perspectives and contributions known. Whether the topic is ESEA reauthorization, Race to the Top, or Priority Schools, the ESP voice must be heard. This ses- sion will focus on strategies for articulating that voice along with and on behalf of ESP's and in part- nership with other Association members and colleagues. Lt. Gov. Matt Denn to keynote L ieutenant Governor Matt Denn took office in January, 2009. His office is dedicated to advocacy for Delaware's children. He also chairs the state's Criminal Justice Council, and works with the Governor on expanding employ- ment opportunities for Delawareans. The Lt. Gov. will address the importance of Educational Support Personnel from his own personal experience with the staff at his sons' schools. Matt's agenda as Lieutenant Governor includes: improving the state's schools, including getting more funding to the classroom, recruiting great teachers, and expanding parental involvement in schools; securing health coverage for Delaware kids; reducing envi- ronmental hazards faced by chil- dren; protecting abused and neg- lected children; and improving services to children with disabili- ties. As a result, you will leave with the new under- standing that membership doesn't cost; it pays! Assertiveness A writer, Sharon Anthony, once noted, "The basic difference between being assertive and being aggressive is how our words and behavior affect the rights and well being of others." In this workshop participants will develop a better understanding of assertive behav- ior and will learn what sets it apart from passive and aggressive behav- ior. As a result of this workshop, participants will know the skills necessary to be more assertive and take charge of their lives. Cultural Competence Students today are more diverse than ever! This program addresses the need for educators to learn to teach students who come from cul- tures other than our own. Participants will learn about devel- oping personal and interpersonal awareness and sensitivity, develop- ing cultural knowledge, and master- ing the skills needed for effective cross-cultural teaching. Bullying The training is built on a research-based curriculum. The training raises awareness of sexual harassment, bullying, cyberbully- ing and sexting behaviors. It spells out concrete steps educators can take to prevent bullying and lays the groundwork for implementing school-wide engagement in bullying prevention. FiSH! FiSH! has created a new vocabu- lary that won't just change how you view work, it just may change your entire view on life. The FiSH! phi- losophy has become an extraordi- nary phenomenon. At Seattle's Pike Place Fish Market, employees don't just fill orders; they fill people - with fun, friendliness, attentive- ness, and enthusiasm. The work is hard, the hours long; yet these employees choose to bring commit- ment to work every day. The four principles of FISH! are Play, Make Their Day, Be There and Choose Your Attitude. You will learn how to use them to work more effective- ly and become better leaders.
