We sadly reported the passing of industry icon and longtime friend and support Carroll Armstrong, who died at age 65. Our cover story for March/April was "African-American Sites & Venues," while fea- tures included "Black Football Classics Are A Big Business," "Major Trade Organizations Assess the Health of the Hospitality Industry," "The NCBMP & NABHOOD Form Strategic Alliance, and "Meetings, Incentives and Traveling in the West." "Special Advertising Sections" were offered for Florida and Virginia, while Arthur Keith was profiled in "Applause," Daniel Fenton profiled in "Newsmakers," Also appearing in this issue were Charlotte Haymore, Velma Hart, Andy Ingraham, Dr. DeWayne Gooding, Chris Russo, Stella Beene- Vensen, and Thandiwe Sylvia January-Mclean. In 2010 Black Meetings & Tourism present- ed another CTO M.I.C.E. Showcase as part of Caribbean Week activities in New York, this time adding a two-hour educational workshop entitled "Risky Business: What if a Disaster or Emergency Happened During Your Meeting?" Gloria Herbert also gave the keynote address at the CTO luncheon for minister, commission- ers, board members, planners and committee members. The theme of her presentation was "Positioning the Caribbean to Get its Fair Share of the M.I.C.E. Market." NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2011 I n the November/December issue we pushed the envelope with two some- what controversial features: "Rough Sledding Continues for BP Disaster Victims," and "South Carolina Still Open For Business," the latter o which took a look at the states tourism industry ad explored some ways for moving beyond the flag issue. The cover story was "The African-American Guide to Meeting, Incentives & Traveling in the Northeast, complemented by several features, includ- ing "BM&T's Annual Convention Center Review," "Airport Hotels Make Convenient Meeting Venues," and "The Most Influential African-Americans in the Tourism/Meetings Industry." "Travel Industry Loses a Giant" mourned the passing of Mamadou Moustapha Diop, a fixture in the Africa travel industry an a friend of many years. Rilious Carter's appointment as V.P. Catering/Convention Services and Park Event Operations for Walt Disney World Resort and Kelly Miller's appointment as the new president/CEO of Tampa Bay & Company was reported in "Newsmakers." Ray Jackson (Walt Disney World Resort) was profiled in "Pacesetters," Also appearing in this issue was Roger Dow, Brian Walker, James Jesse, Richard Cook, Theda "TJ" Jackson, William Talbert, Beverly Nicholson-Doty, Norman Jenkins, Sheila Johnson, Andy Ingraham, Evens Charles, Brian Parker, Senator Allen Chastanet, Clara Carter, Al Hutchinson, Robert Johnson, Cheryl Richards, Gregory O'Dell, Zita Steglich-Ross, Al tucker, President Barack Obama, Lee Moultrie and Twila Jones. MAY/JUNE 2012 "T he African-American Guide to Meetings, Incentives & Travel in the West" graced our cover for March/April. Other features in this issue included "Wonderful Winter Getaways," "Benchmark Hospitality International's 2012 Top 10 Meeting Trends," and the "Florida Special Advertising Section." "Newsmakers" reported on Melvin Tennant being elected to the Board of Directors of the U.S. Travel Association, and John Rolfe being named COO of the Greater Houston CVB, while Dittie Guise (Montego Bay Convention Center) was profiled in Pacesetters." In 2012, Brand USA rolled out their "Discover America" initiative for promoting the United States to international travelers, while the U.S. Travel Association launched their Vote Travel Campaign, "The Power of Travel…Get America Moving," both of which were covered in Black Meetings & Tourism.
