Nakatrice Booker (National Society of Minorities n Hospitality) was featured n "Planner Profile," Candice "Candy" Reynolds was showcased in "Travel Agent Profile," and Jose Jones (National Association of Black Scuba Divers) and Nina D. Reese (Philadelphia MAC) featured in "Newsmakers." FEBRUARY/MARCH 2006 "V anderpool-Wallace Wows CTC- 28 Attendees with Electrifying Address" was the lead story's headline for February/March's "Caribbean Corner" department. The newly-installed CTO secretary general urged his organization and the Caribbean Hotel Association "to own, pro- tect, advance and enhance the Caribbean brand and have the fruits of such efforts redound to the benefit of the Caribbean peo- ple." "Black History Month Focus: Historic Sites and Venues" offered suggestions for business and leisure travelers with a passion for her- itage tourism, and showcased Birmingham, AL, Cincinnati, OH, Columbia, SC, Hampton, VA, Jackson, MS, Louisville, KY, Montgomery, AL, Norfolk, VA, Oakland, CA, Philadelphia, PA and Topeka, KS, among others. While many of our articles are about desti- nations, we also make sure to include more cutting edge pieces, like "Dealing with Sexism in the Hospitality/Tourism/Meetings Industry," and "Down and Out, Part II," both of which also appeared in the February/March issue. Other stories included the "Florida Special Advertising Section," "Meeting at the Beach," "The African-American Guide to Meeting and Traveling in the West" cover story, and :"Walt Disney World Resort: The Happiest Celebration on Earth Continues Through 2006." LaVette Henderson (National Dental Association) was featured in "Planner Profile," Marcus Cade (Salt Lake CVB) was profiled in "Applause," Cassandra Taylor (Memphis CVB) was profiled in "Pacesetters," and Stephanie Scott-Johnson" was showcased in "Travel Agent Profile." Other familiar faces in this issue included Arthur Keith, Yolanda Bullock-Cooper, Kathleen Bertrand, Louis Overstreet, Stephen Richer, Kitty Ratcliff, Rep. Maxine Waters, Rev. France Davis, Thomas Penny, James Jesse and Jon Manns. APRIL/MAY 2007 I n my April/May "Publisher's Message" I reported the sad news of the passing of Freddye Henderson, one of the giants in the travel industry. Freddye, along with her husband Jake, founded the first Black- owned travel agency in the United States, and were also pioneers in travel to Africa. In addition to our annual cover story "The African-American Guide to Meeting, Incentives & Traveling in the South," features included "Dealing With Difficult People," "Lodging Industry Report Card: Does it Work?", Are You Getting Your Fair Share of The Religious Meetings Market," "Who Are Candidates For Next African-American CVB President?", "African-American Guide to Gaming," and "The Experts Speak: PR & Advertising Fr The African-American Market," as well as "Special Advertising Sections" for Virginia and Texas. Our "Newsmakers" department report- ed on Kathleen Bertrand being promoted to senior vice president, Community and Government Affairs for the Atlanta CVB, Gary Sain being named president of the Orlando/Orange County CVB, and Lephate Cunningham launching HotelBox. Monica Smith (Pasadena CVB) was profiled in "Applause", Mary Right (NAACP) was fea- tured in "Meeting Planner Profile," and Latrec Square (Square Deal Trophies & Awards), was showcased in "Vendor Spotlight."
