5 SURVIVAL TIPS: HOW TO LEAVE YOUR MARK WITH SAILOR JERRY RUM From crisply pressed uniforms to handiness with an array of knots, what's not to love about a sailor? But when you're talking Sailor Jerry Rum, you're getting a whole lot more than a South Pacific musical number—unless there's a Punk Rock version of "Some Enchanted Evening" we're not familiar with. The rum is named after Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins, who tattooed countless servicemen in Hawaii during WWII, popularizing the traditional style of tattoos we all recognize to- day. Sailor Jerry the man became a legend, and, decades later, a team of tatted devotees launched Sailor Jerry the brand in his honor. Although we love the lore, we must admit, this rum is legit. Bursting with intense vanil- la and cinnamon, this smooth sipper is a dream in tiki cocktails and dive bars alike, but this is more than just grog: Sailor Jerry's smooth character cleans up nicely and offers a spiced and flavorful base for a variety of craft cocktails. But Sailor Jerry Rum is more than a Caribbean cruise for your tastebuds: The brand is a veritable lifestyle, from the obvious (tattoos), to the unexpected (clothing lines, skateboards and rock shows, oh my!), it is a rock-and-roll rum, through and through. 6 Let's face it: No one wants to be lost in history without making a mark, but there's something to be said for staking claim to your legendary status and sticking to it¬—over 125 years later. Such is the case with Glenfiddich Single Malt Whisky, which was founded by William Grant in 1886 and remains owned and operated by the Grant family today. Talk about legend—wait for it!—dary. But there's more than a toehold and a family name that makes this single malt collection so special: Glenfiddich's juice is as close to fabled ambrosia as they come in this business. From the powerhouse baseline Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18 and 21 Year Olds, to the magnificent 40 Year Old and the history-inspired Age of Discovery editions, which venture into bourbon and Madeira cask finishes, Glenfiddich continues to evolve and push forward, never resting on its historic laurels. Though storied, it's the evolution of Glenfiddich that truly makes it the stuff of legends: These days around the mixology campfires, today's Scotch disciples are praising Glenfiddich's Kin- dred Spirit campaign, which encourages intrepid tastemakers to dream up a dram so unique that it's worth of Glenfiddich's legendary status (see page 128).
