With the World Beer Awards now in its eighth year, the competition's popularity continues to grow as it recognizes excellence within the world of beer. This year, beer poured in from all corners of the globe to compete for the coveted title of "World's Best Beer." In the end, it was a European brew from Belgium that claimed the top prize despite strong competition from Asia and The Americas. The international judging panel identified the best beers in each of the eight categories of the annual awards. With around 700 beers from more than 30 countries, judges blind-tasted and scored the entries over four rounds of judging. After a lengthy process, they finally named Haacht Brewery's Tongerlo Blond of Belgium as "World's Best Beer 2014." The Belgian beer faced tough competition from the winners of the remaining seven categories: WORLD'S BEST LAGER Samuel Adams Double Bock (United States) WORLD'S BEST WHEAT BEER Brasil Kirin Eisenbahn Weizenbock (Brazil) WORLD'S BEST DARK BEER Malheur 12 (Belgium) WORLD'S BEST SPECIALITY BEER Samuel Adams Roggen Wolf (United States) WORLD'S BEST PALE BEER Haacht Brewery Tongerlo Blond (Belgium) WORLD'S BEST FLAVORED BEER Redoak Special Reserve (Australia) WORLD'S BEST STOUT & PORTE Redoak Baltic Porter (Australia) WORLD'S BEST SOUR BEER Mort Subite Oude Geuze (Belgium) The winners and runners up in each of the style categories are awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze to mark their success. Adrian Tierney-Jones, European chairman of the World Beer Awards says: "After three arduous rounds of beer tasting and evaluating the merits of beers from all over the world, I'm very pleased to see the results of our hard labors. The spread of winners shows the quality of beers from all over the world, and I'm especially pleased to see Brazilian beers amongst the winners. It's slightly disappointing not to see any British beers as the final winners, but on the other hand, plenty have taken category awards including Thwaites, BrewDog and Harveys. Finally, I would like to thank the judges for all their work—they deserve a drink!" These awards have once again been a great success and judges are already looking forward to 2015. Until then, preparations are underway for round one of the next set of awards—Gin, Rum and Vodka—in October.
