As we all know, in time, Ernst Rolf, that young man who distributed the drinks so generously, did get to the top job on the editor's chart, and went from there to the top of the top, and beyond. Rumor had it that at one time in his distinguished career, he demanded and received more money per film than any of his very highly paid competitors. But along the way, something else occurred that should be recorded: Tom Rolf became an artist, and a very great one. True to his gentlemanly code, he never talked about it. He simply did it, and did it well. f (Editor's Note: Norman Schwartz wrote this memoir as a birthday salute to Tom Rolf a few years ago — "a tribute from one assistant editor to another back in ye olde splicing days." Entirely coincidentally, he submitted it unsolicited to CineMontage about the time that Rolf 's sudden passing was announced. He is happy to have it appear here as a memorial to his former colleague.) PASSAGES OBITUARY NOTICE If family members or friends would like to write an obituary for their loved ones in the "Passages" section of CineMontage, please contact Tomm Carroll at tcarroll@ editors guild.com for guidelines and due dates All deceased members will be listed in "In Memoriam" after the Guild is notified of their passing Tom Rolf, center, with his surfing buddies in the mid-1950s.
