"I never really use any plug-ins, apart from the occasional use of Audio Ease Speakerphone and DUY Magic Spectrum," he explains. "I work with Avid Pro Tools and sometimes Steinberg Nuendo DAWs. "Harrison offers an amazing on-board package within the MPC digital console that it calls Toys; these are my plug-ins of choice," Massey continues. "They include a Six-Band De-Noiser, a Two-Band De-Noiser, Multi-Band Compressors, Multi-Band Expander, De-Esser, Buzz Kill Filters, Camera Noise Filters, Sub-Harmonic Synth, Tape Saturation, Bus Limiters and several more." Fellow sound effects mixer David Giammarco (About Last Night, Moneyball, The Amazing Spiderman 2) with Sony's Grant Stage lists Avid TL Space, Audio Ease Altiverb, SoundToys EchoBoy, Audio Ease Speakerphone, DUY Magic Spectrum EQ and iZotope RX3 plug-ins "through an outboard Pro Tools plug-in rig that I access from the stage's Harrison MPC4 console." In addition to these plug-ins, he also uses the Toys package that Harrison offers, including Sub-harmonic Synthesizer, Multi-Band Compressor, De- Esser, Camera Filter and Phone Simulator. TV re-recording mixer Craig Hunter (Raising Hope, Breakout Kings, My Name Is Earl) with RF Factor post facility lists iZotope Ozone 5 Advanced and RX3, Massenburg MDW Para EQ, McDSP ML4000/Futzbox, Waves Q10 EQ, Massey De-esser, Audio Ease Altiverb, Zynaptiq Unveil and Unfilter and Cedar One plug-ins. "I also use Avid Pro Tools 10 Clip Gain which, although not a plug-in, deserves mention because of its game- changing nature," Hunter adds. "I choose all plug-ins first for their sound quality, and secondly for session integration and ease of use. At RH Factor, we use both Avid System 5MC and ICON D-Control surfaces. "Certain companies are now providing very good algorithms for intelligent noise processing and spectral analysis repair," he continues. "That continuing evolution will remain important. Also, the further development of IR/Impulse Response and analysis software will provide valuable tools for re-creating the environments from original production tracks." TV/film re-recording mixer Tom Marks, CAS (Gang Related, Mob City, Killer Women), with Warner Bros. Post Facilities lists Massenburg MDW EQ for equalization, Wholegrain Digital Systems Quartet for dynamics, iZotope RX3 Advanced for noise reduction, Exponential Audio R2 Surround for reverb, and FabFilter Pro-DS for de-essing. "We have three-to-six Pro Tools systems on the dub stage being used as playback machines, and a stem recorder, also for picture playback," he says. "A lot of the mixing is happening on an Avid ICON controller; other times, it's on a conventional console." What makes all of these plug-ins so great to Marks' mind? "They sound fantastic and are very dependable," he explains. "For mixing, we don't want to do harm to the material we are given; these tools help us do our jobs while working in a very transparent way. We need plug-ins that are stable within the Pro Tools environment, are light on the CPU, and play back automation 100 percent reliably. I'd like to see continuing development for plug-ins, control surfaces and software that help us work more efficiently by reducing the number of steps needed to accomplish the same tasks." f McDSP ML4000 Plug-In.
