39 SEP-OCT 14 / CINEMONTAGE "Altiverb offers natural-sounding reverbs using impulse responses of objects that can be a metal helmet, glass, hollow tube, etc." Hemphill adds. "We use it as part of my edit/mix template. It is often my go-to reverb, and was great for putting sounds into a space for the expanse and depths of a maze [in Maze Runner]. I used some IRs that I created to design gigantic metal gear cogs in the stone doors of the maze, or liquid running through pipes for the backgrounds. Much of the audio world happens off-stage; we kept the sounds virtual on an ICON mixer." According to supervising sound editor Ai Ling Lee, who handled sound design as well as pre-mixing on Maze Runner using an Avid ICON, "Lowender offers extra 'oomph' for some sounds, or makes a sound big, so that you feel them without playing it too loud. ML4000 has big and warm qualities; I often use it to beef up sounds. I recorded a lot of rocks sliding on various surfaces and grit, even styrofoam creaks and snaps. But to make the sounds seem like 100-foot-tall stone doors or walls that weigh tons, I used ML4000 to make them sound huge and fat. The user interface and pre-sets makes it easy to use. "Avid Channel Strip offers EQ, dynamics, filter, gain, all in one," Lee continues. "I use this on all the tracks in my edit/mix template. It comes with all Pro Tools applications, which makes it easily compatible if I move from one location to the next, from editing to sound design suites to the dubbing stage. It is a very useful, flexible and productive EQ; sometimes I can carve out different qualities of a sound with just EQ. I use Ultrapitch on some sounds to sell their size, particularly on creature vocals and impacts, etc." Re-recording mixer Andy Koyama, CAS (Million Dollar Arm, Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, Lone Survivor), with Formosa Group lists iZotope RX3 Advanced, FabFilter Pro Q EQ, FabFilter Pro C dynamics and FabFilter Pro DS de-esser, Universal Audio Maag EQ4, Lexicon PCM reverbs and Audio Ease Speakerphone, primarily for mixing on Avid ICON control surfaces with an Xkeys programmable keyboard. "RX3 can magically remove unwanted noise, while FabFilter products are powerful, clean and easy to use with a great GUI," Koyama offers. "Maag EQ brightens a track without harshness like no other EQ; I have yet to discover better 'verbs than the Lexicon plug-ins!" TV re-recording mixer/supervising sound editor Jason Brennan (Suburgatory, The Fosters, Shameless) with Warner Bros. Post Facilities lists iZotope RX3 Advanced primarily for editorial and mixing, Avid Channel Strip, DMG Audio Equality, Universal Audio Lexicon 224, McDSP NF575, Futzbox, Audio Ease Altiverb, Waves WNS and W43 and/or Cedar for dialogue pre-dubs and final mixes. "RX3 is great for cleaning up dialogue Serato Pitch 'N Time Plug-In. SoundToys Crystallizer Plug-In.
