www.postmagazine.com 6 POST AUGUST 2014 NEW YORK — LA-based sound designer Frank Serafi ne (www.frankserafi ne.com) was in New York recently to help set up a new exhibit at Discovery Times Square on 44th Street. The Marvel's Avengers STATION Exhibition is an immersive experience in which attendees can walk through and interact with the workspaces used by the popular superheroes. Serafi ne helped design the sound experience for the multi-room exhibit, which includes Dr. Banner's Lab, Captain America's Birth Pod, the Tesseract Portal Device, Loki's Scepter, and the armor worn by Iron Man. Visitors can interact with large touch-screen monitors and even test their own physical capabilities to see how they match up against the likes of Captain America and The Hulk. The installation incorporates 280 speakers, many of which are from PreSonus. Numerous others were custom built specifi cally for the installation. Mac Minis and HP workstations are used to power the sound experience, says Serafi ne, which ranges from full 7.1, down to simple mono with a sub. Some of the sound elements were pulled from Skywalker Sound's own fi lm library. The exhibit will be in New York for several months, before moving on to other cities. — BY MARC LOFTUS NEW YORK — Sound Lounge (www.sound- lounge.com) has been working on DirecTV's latest campaign, which uses marionettes to show off the freedom that comes from not having lots of cables. The campaign was conceived by Grey NYC and made use of real actors to initially create the marionette mother and son characters. The characters were ultimately recreated in CGI in order to produce the puppet-like movements. Sound Lounge was tasked with creating the original sound design for the life-size mario- nettes. Tom Jucarone came on-board early in the creative process and later brought in a bunch of wooden toys, which were recorded on the wood fl oor of his studio at Sound Lounge. In addition to capturing sounds of the toys on the fl oor, Jucarone also captured parts knock- ing into each other, much like the limbs of the marionettes. "For me, sound design is a process of creation and discovery," he notes. "You defi nitely need to start out with a point of view, whether it's yours or your clients, but then you are continuously experimenting by creating diff erent sounds and then discovering what works and what doesn't." Pretty, No More Wires and Play were edited at Cosmo Street. For more on "Audio For Commer- cials," turn to our feature on page 28.
