Outstanding Recent Releases Artezin 2009 Zinfandel, Mendocino County ($18) Colored an inky purple, this candy-coated raspberry bombshell explodes in the mouth with deep, resinous notes of red cherry and cocoa powder. THE HESS COLLECTION Ravenswood 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel, Napa County ($16) The nose is delicate pink raspberry, the palate a deeper tone of the same; moderately acidic but very tannic and long. CONSTELLATION WINES U.S. Ridge 2009 Zinfandel, Ponzo, Russian River Valley ($24) Lush mint and sage accent wild strawberry on the nose; the palate is all about sarsaparilla and juicy red fruit and the finish is sweet and long. Brazin 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel, Monte Rosso Vineyard, Sonoma County ($33) Dark purple and powerful, it’s a kirsch-laced, red-cherry wonder that also provides waves of pomegranate, cocoa and mint. The finish is high-toned and very long. DFV WINES Terra d’Oro 2007 Zinfandel, Amador County ($15) Dark red in the glass, with aromas of kirsch and raspberry liqueur. On the tongue are red cherries, cola and plump prunes. TFE WINES Earthquake 2008 Zinfandel, Lodi ($22) Beet-purple, this exudes aromas of roasted mocha and crushed blackberries. The palate is deep, dark and delicious, with gobs of black cherry, cola, tea and cinnamon. MICHAEL DAVID WINERY Terra d’Oro 2008 Zinfandel, Home Vineyard, Amador County ($30) Now encased in a more traditional Zin bottle, this ruby-red concoction’s nose bursts with bright purple fruit and pink peppercorns; the palate is cocoa and mint aligned with plums and red raspberries. TFE WINES Joel Gott 2008 Zinfandel, California ($13) Dark and mys- terious, with tons of black cherry and blackberry leading to brown sugar and apricot on a bright, chewy finish. TFE WINES Terra d’Oro 2007 Zinfandel, SHR Field Blend, Amador County ($30) A significant amount of Petite Sirah in the blend brings spicy beef brisket and black pepper along on a wild, kirsch and blackberry-infused ride; a wall of tannin makes this thickly enjoyable, and the finish is high and long. TFE WINES Maggio Family Vineyards 2008 Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi ($11) A tremendous value, at first this wine promotes kirsch, sweet red licorice and black raspberry. Over time, chocolate cream and coconut appear, but the fruit never fades. OAK RIDGE WINERY Writer’s 2008 Block Zinfandel, Lake County ($16) A dusty purple tint leads to a nose of cherry and watermelon. It’s a juicy wine that shows oodles of red cherry and licorice on an intense finish. STEELE WINES june 201 1 / the tasting panel / 117
