WHAT’S SHAKING doctor himself) and, from the German competitor, a drink that utilized an instant, flamed lemon thyme–rum infu- sion and the “Bavarian hard shake.” The American bartender, John Lermayer of the Florida Room in Miami, made the Smuggler’s Fizz; a drink inspired by a vintage cocktail he tried at tiki bar Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco. Lermayer’s version con- tained lavender bitters and elderflower liqueur, among other ingredients. He said the drink represented his country, as it’s “colorful and fun, with a lot of flavors mixed together.” During his cocktail presentation, Lermayer added, “Don Facundo used rum to create his legacy. I use cocktails to create mine.” After all ten bartenders prepared their drinks for the judges, the very thirsty guests were able to try some of the competition’s cocktails at a reception before sitting down to dinner and the announcement of the results. Judges Perrone, Vadrna, Gavito, McBride and Bacardi Global Brand Ambassador David Cordoba took the stage to make the proclamation. The winner of the first Bacardi Global Legacy Cocktail Competition was Marc Bonneton of the bar L’Antiquaire in Lyon, France. His drink, Marco´s Bacardi Fizz, is a spinoff of the Ramos Gin Fizz with rum in place of gin and Chartreuse (made near Lyon) in place of orange flower water. In about one year’s time, the second Bacardi Global Legacy Cocktail Competition will take place, coinciding with the brand’s 150th anniversary. Though no official confirmation was given, this reporter overheard that bar- tenders from at least 15 countries will compete next year in Puerto Rico. With word spreading quickly through the industry about the grandeur of this year’s contest, the competition among bartenders at next year’s competition will surely be intense. But then again, it’s not easy to create a legacy. PHOTO COURTESY OF BACARDI PHOTO: CAMPER ENGLISH PHOTO COURTESY OF BACARDI
