POST: What recent conversion project was especially challenging? AKEY: "The live-action portion of The Lego Movie was great to be involved in. It started with a meet-and-greet with the film- makers, then sharing boards and consulting on-set. The challenge was creating a sense of scale in a sequence shot from a two-inch character POV, as the Lego character lands in the human world. During the shoot we were on-set, creating realtime 3D versions of set- ups for discussion, to show how much vol- ume Will Ferrell's character would have ver- sus the Lego setups, and how the live action would ultimately be integrated with the CG animated scenes surrounding it. We estab- lished a triangle of creative strategy — Leg- end, filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and animation studio Animal Logic — to get a clear vision of where the 3D would go from prepro to delivery. And it worked out really well. Phil and Chris are among the most dynamic and collaborative directors I've worked with; they promoted very open communication and a spirit of excitement on-set and in post." PARRY: "Our work as the full conversion vendor for Captain America: Winter Soldier marked a major evolution in our VFX pipe- line. We worked directly with Industrial Light & Magic to create a shared, intermediate digital infrastructure. When you're delivering a major movie that took a high level of trust; each group had to be sure that we were creating a technical process that would be more, not less, efficient for both of us. The result was an incredibly efficient pipeline that we're already implementing on another fea- ture. We see this leading to one pipeline bridged across global companies as timelines continue to shrink, and we have to invent new ways of working together." COGAN: "We worked on the live-action narrative Chinese feature, Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, the number one or number two domestic production with box office revenues of about $200 million. It had several long, dynamic shots of 1,400-plus frames. That's a lot of data to handle at a single time; we developed a bit of a custom workflow for the picture because our artists required a longer turnaround time for these shots and that helped fill some of these big holes quickly and allowed [director Stephen Chow] to see those scenes in their proper context." MCKEE: "My business partner, Peter Bow- ers, has produced concert films with some of the biggest bands, and we have licensed access to a huge catalog of shows, including concerts by Alter Bridge and Chickenfoot.
