Stetz M otion Picture Editors Guild President Alan Heim, A.C.E., dedicated the Guild's revamped Training Room as the Dede Allen Seminar Room on Saturday, April 5 at the Guild's Hollywood offices. Tom Fleischman, CAS, and Ramey Ward, the respective son and daughter of the late Allen, A.C.E., were on hand and made remarks after the brief ceremony. A slide show of images of Allen from throughout her career was projected on a wall during the event. An intimate crowd of around 50 came by to witness the dedication, including many of the Guild's Board members. Among the guests, some of whom were mentored by or collaborated with Allen, were Richard Marks, A.C.E., Barbara Marks, Michael Tronick, A.C.E., Jerry Greenberg, A.C.E., Eric Beason, A.C.E., Robert Brakey, Nancy Frazen, Karen Rasch and many others. "Dede's contributions to filmmaking were groundbreaking," said Heim. "The editorial techniques she introduced to American feature films, including pre-lapped sound and the juxtaposition of dramatically different images, are nowhere better exhibited than in Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde. What seemed shocking and radical in 1967 is accepted as standard narrative storytelling technique today. Ms. Allen changed the art of film editing, and in so doing, she also permanently changed the language of filmmaking. Carol Littleton has remarked that 'Dede brought the lexicon of the French New Wave into American filmmaking and, of course, scandalized Hollywood.'" Instead of cutting a ribbon with scissors, Heim dedicated the Dede Allen Seminar by cutting a long piece of 70mm film with an archaic splicer from his personal collection. Board members F. Hudson Miller, MPSE, and Suhail F. Kafity, MPSE, who co-chair the Guild's Training Committee, prepared the room with photos of Allen, posters from her films and a brief biography, all of which adorned the walls. Allen had served as Vice President of Motion Pictures Editors Guild from 2002 to 2004. In 1996, she was elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors representing film editors, and remained in the position until 2007.
