WORDS AND DEEDS More than 1,000 attendees – the highest meeting planner turnout in three years – gathered inTampa,Florida January 25- 28 for Religious Conference Management Association’s (RCMA) 39th World Conference & Expo, themed New Vision, at the Tampa Convention Center. More than a dozen expert-led tutorial sessions included workshops on negotiating strategies, how to reach different audiences with socialmedia, tips for addressing security issues atmeetings,and howto add pizzazz to eventswithout breaking the bank, plus a two-part boot camp on legal issues. More than 225 planners participated in Behind-the-Scenes Experiences,which included: learning convention center oper- ations at the Tampa Convention Center; picking up tips for marketing meetings at a major Tampa advertising/marketing company; understanding hotel operations at three different Tampa hotels;exploring creativitywith a local production com- pany; and gaining an insider’s look at how theme parks handle group business at BuschGardens. Daniel Carr, GES senior national sales manager, received the 2011 President’s Award, given annually to a member demonstrating leadership in both professional and personal realms.Four newmembers ofRCMA’s board of directorswere inducted and began serving three-year terms: Hugh W. Hill, Awana;Debra K.Mardis, The SalvationArmy; Jim Nirmaier, Visit FortWayne; andMichelle Penner,Canadian Conference ofMennonite Brethren Churches. For the sixth consecutive year, the association capped its conference with the announcement of a $100,000 donation to feed the world’s hungry children. The African-American Baptist Mission Collaboration (AABMC) presentedHabitat forHumanity Internationalwith a second grant of $500,000 in December to support the home- buildingministry’s recovery programinHaiti.The donation fol- lows a previous gift given to the organization in June, bringing 24 the AABMC’s total contribution to Habitat to $1 million. Immediately following the earthquake in Haiti last year, Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, National Baptist Convention, USA, National Baptist Convention of America, National Missionary Baptist Convention of America and the Progressive National Baptist Convention formed the collabo- ration to leverage the impact their members could have in the region. The collaboration granted Habitat $500,000 in June 2010, making it the largest faith-based donation Habitat had received for Haiti relief. The NAACP branches and units con- tributed $50,000 to the second AABMC $500,000 grant. The current gift will be used in Leogane to fund more than 80 housing solutions, which includes materials, construction, site preparation, water, sanitation, training, community engage- ment and access to basic infrastructure such as roads, schools and churches. The initial funding supported the construction of transitional shelters to help meet basic needs of more than 1,600 Haitians in Cabaret.
