From the Editor U TM sually springtime in Hollywood is a lush time with the Hollywood Hills turning a bright green from recent rains and wildflowers in bloom. This year is no exception. It’s a lovely time to take a hike in our urban wilderness or along our boulevards and neighborhoods. Because in summer and winter we have an influx of visitors from all over the world, spring and fall are considered “shoulder sea- sons” but not so, this year. It could be that more of us are just out and about enjoying Southern California at its best, or, possibly due to the economy, people just have more “free” time these days. But no matter what season, there’s no better place to enjoy the beauty and wonder of Los Angeles than from the majestic vistas from Griffith Observatory. Rena LeBlanc explored the universe with Dr. Edwin Krupp, Director. What a delightful man! So gracious, energetic and knowledge- able and also willing to take a few moments to share with Blake and Hallie Fields whose mom, Krista, brought them and their younger brother Gun- ner to the Observatory. As a native Angeleno, I didn’t realize until I had at chance to meet the Fields , how this place is so much part of our lives. Whether it’s going from exhibit to exhibit as a kid, watching the swinging pendulum or taking in a show in the planetarium, a trip to the Observatory also marks life’s seasons. Today it’s a joy to behold. It’s a photographers delight and a nostalgic trip down memory lane all rolled into one. And if it’s a great trip you’re looking for, I invite you to visit the other Los Angeles—Puebla, Mexico. My husband, Oscar and I, discovered this very Spain-like city late last year and it exceeded all our expectations. We hope you enjoy our Hollywood Discovers travelogue. This year our publication celebrates its 25th Anniversary as does the Hol- lywood Arts Council’s annual Awards “The Charlies”. The venerable tour company, Starline Tours has been around for 75 years—now that’s longevity. Starline’s owners, the Sapir brothers, are an American success story. Like so many immigrants—and many of our forebears—they arrived from their native Iran with little in their pockets but a drive to succeed. James Bartlett’s story about the Sapirs is inspiring and makes us think about our own heritage. As you browse Discover Hollywood’s information-packed pages, even if you can’t take advantage of all that is offered, isn’t it exciting to see the pro- fusion of art and entertainment you could sample this spring? And, also, don’t forget to smell the flowers.
