34 Spring 2014 x AEA Advocate Teacher Opportunities nea foundation: Learning & Leadership grants NEA Foundation Learning & Leadership Grants support public school teachers, public education support professionals, and/or faculty and staff in public institutions of higher education for one of two purposes: Grants to individuals fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences, such as summer institutes or action research; grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. Public school teachers grades K-12; public school education support professionals; or faculty and staff at public higher education institutions are eligible for these $2,000 grants. Apply online by June 1, 2014 at www.neafoundation.org/pages/ learning-leadership-grants. fund for teaChers The Fund for Teachers offers direct grants of up to $5,000 to teachers to support summer learning opportunities of their own design. Teachers grades pre-kindergarten through 12, with a minimum of three years teaching experience, full-time, spending at least 50 percent of the time in the classroom at the time grants are approved and made are eligible. Apply online at www.fundforteachers.org. earthWatCh institute: feLLoWships The Earthwatch Institute offers educators fully funded fellowships for hands-on learning with leading scientists doing field research and conservation on projects around the world. Elementary, middle, and high school educators and administrators of any discipline are eligible. Apply online by May 1, 2014 at earthwatch. org/education/teacher-fellowships. 2014 suMMer agriCuLturaL institute For almost 25 years, The University of Arizona has organized a five-day tour designed to teach K-12 teachers about Arizona's food and fiber production and help them incorporate that knowledge into their classroom curriculum. The Summer Agricultural Institute (SAI) combines hands-on learning about agriculture with practical curriculum development. Educators will receive a certificate indicating 48 professional development hours. Educators also have the option of receiving up to three graduate level credits (at their own expense) through The University of Arizona. From those who apply, 30 educators will be selected by the SAI Committee. Applications are due by May 1, participants will be notified by May 10, and money will be due by May 25. The 2014 SAI will be held from June 9-13. Those who apply by March 1 will lock in a payment of $85 and those who apply after March 1 will have a payment of $125. Caring institute: 2014 Caring aWards The Caring Institute is now accepting nominations for its annual Caring Awards. Nominees should exemplify caring and serve as worthy role models for others. Award criteria include length of service, scope and impact of work, challenges overcome, and imagination and innovation. All winners are honored at a special ceremony, and young adult winners receive funds for college. Apply online by March 15, 2014 at www.ezra-jack-keats.org/ how-to-apply-for-a-minigrant. nationaL suMMer Learning assoCiation: exCeLLenCe in suMMer Learning aWard The Excellence in Summer Learning Award recognizes an outstanding summer program that demonstrates excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting positive development for young people between kindergarten and 12th grade.
