THE MESSAGE Whether THE TASTING PANEL goes to the brand execs or the brands call us, there is an abundance of news to report, from the latest releases to behind-the-scenes experiences with some of the world's most influential importers, winemakers, distillers . . . well, you name it. Brief Encounters We may not have enough pages in each issue to devote as much attention as we would like to each person whose path we cross, but please note that if it's in the publication, we deem it noteworthy —Meridith May, Publisher & Executive Editor Cloudy Bay's New Pinot Noir S ince its first vintage in 1985, Cloudy Bay, the powerhouse winery in New Zealand's Marlborough region, has helped establish the country's robust Sauvignon Blanc style in the minds of American consumers. Since winery's acquisition by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Möet Hennessy) in 2003, its presence on the American market is even stronger. This year, the winery's 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, now rolling out, has a complementary red: the 2010 Te Wahi Pinot Noir, source from Central Otago. Te Wahi means "our place" in the country's native Maori language. And that, says winemaker Tim Heath, is the point: He wants the wine to speak of a place. "We're aiming for a masculine Pinot expression built around a spine of tannin," says Heath. "The wine must have a silky mouthfeel." —Timothy Moriarty Cloudy Bay 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand Pineapple and hints of grass on the nose. Markedly integrated on the palate: citrus and hay/grassy, a bit of chalk. Mellow, not piercing, acidity supports a medium body. Long, pleasing finish. ▲ ▲ Cloudy Bay winemaker Tim Heath. On the palate, light tannins and firm acidity frame flavors of plum, berries and herb, with a hint of smoke. The acidity carries the finish. 16  /  the tasting panel  / january 2014 january 2014 TP0114_001-33.indd 16 12/19/13 9:23 PM
