2010 EL MAYOR Reposado Tequila, Mexico ($40) All American Athlete MAKER’S 46 ($33) The first new product from Maker’s Mark in fifty years, Maker’s 46 comes straight out of Kentucky, with a honey-caramel nose and spicy notes of maple, cream and smoke. This Bluegrass State native packs in dried fruits, hickory and more on its mellow, soft-spoken but sensual texture. If it performs like its respected older brother, Maker’s Mark, that’s because it starts as the same product but is given extended aging on charred French barrel staves. The result is smokier and more forward—a brawny younger sibling who has now reached our graduating class via the varsity playing field. Seamlessness of flavor and suave Southern manners make Maker’s 46 (named for the experimental batch that got the final nod from Master Distiller Kevin Smith and brand owner Bill Samuels, Jr.) a surefire ingredient in classic mixed drinks that call for a Thoroughbred bourbon. Maker’s 46 2 orange slices 2 Maraschino cherries ½ oz. club soda 1 teaspoon sugar Muddle orange slice, Maraschino cherry and teaspoon of sugar in an Old Fashioned glass. Fill glass with ice. Add Maker’s 46 and a splash of club soda. Garnish with additional orange slice and Maraschino cherry.
