The Summer Agricultural Institute (SAI) combines hands-on learning about agriculture with practical curriculum development. Educators will receive a certificate indicating 48 professional development hours. Educators also have the option of receiving up to three graduate level credits (at their own expense) through The University of Arizona. From those who apply, 30 educators will be selected by the SAI Committee. Applications are due by May 1, participants will be notified by May 10, and money will be due by May 25. The 2014 SAI will be held from June 9-13. Those who apply by March 1 will lock in a payment of $85 and those who apply after March 1 will have a payment of $125. Small Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Student & Teacher Institute is a unique student-teacher cooperative learning opportunity. Don't miss the chance to walk the beaches of Normandy 70 years after the invasion. The institute is June 21 – July 3, 2014. Applications are due to National History Day by December 2, 2013. AAPT: Barbara Lotze Scholarships for Future Teachers The American Association of Physics Teachers Barbara Lotze Scholarships offer funds of up to $2,000 for future high school physics teachers. Kennedy Center: Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards The Kennedy Center seeks nominations for Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards, awarded to K-12 Winter.13advo.indd 34 teachers and college or university instructors in the U.S. in recognition of their outstanding impact on the lives of students. Winners will receive $10,000. Nominees must be legal residents of the United States. Nomination must be based on experience as a full-time classroom teacher in a K-12 school in the U.S., or as a college or university instructor in the U.S. Nominators must be 18 years of age and have been a student of the nominee. Dollar General: Beyond Words Library Disaster Relief Dollar General, in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the National Education Association (NEA), is sponsoring a school library disaster relief fund for public school libraries in the states served by Dollar General. The fund will provide grants to public schools whose school library program has been affected by a disaster. Grants are up to $15,000 to replace or supplement books, media, and/or library equipment in the school library setting. Eligibility is open to public school libraries Pre K-12 located within 20 miles of a Dollar General store, distribution center, or corporate office that have lost their building or incurred substantial damage or hardship due to a natural disaster (tornado, earthquake, hurricane, flood, avalanche, mudslide), fire, or an act recognized by the federal government as terrorism; or have absorbed a significant number (more than 10% enrollment) of displaced/evacuee students. Do Something: Seed Grants Do Something Seed Grants for youth can be used towards project ideas and programs that are just getting started, or to jump-start a program and realize ideas for the first time. These grants can also be used towards projects that are already developed and sustainable, towards the next steps of a project and organization as it looks to expand and grow impact.
