BEHIND THE SCENES WITH FRED DAME A Conversation with Peter Schumacher Owner/Partner, Buckeye Roadhouse, Mill Valley, CA photos by Christine Tomlinson Peter Schumacher with Fred Dame, MS, at Buckeye Roadhouse in Mill Valley, CA. Fred Dame: Peter, I was just thinking how long I have been coming to Buckeye Roadhouse. I love it not only for the outstanding cuisine, wine list and cocktails, but it's location in Mill Valley: Right over the Golden Gate Bridge and half way between Napa and San Francisco. Perfect for winery meetings and tastings! Peter Schumacher: You know, Fred, the original Buckeye Roadhouse was built in 1937 just as the Golden Gate Bridge was being finished. In fact, you can see links of bridge cable being used in our décor. It gets its name from the buckeye trees surrounding the building and was originally a German restaurant. Fred: So many changes have been made. Peter: Correct. The name Buckeye Roadhouse really called for an American cuisine concept, featuring wines of California. Fred: Let's start by tasting two wines to get the day started correctly. I brought the Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Kalia Chardonnay and the Delas Cornas. I know the Delas is French but I've been dying to taste it with your legendary house-smoked brisket! Peter: The Stag's Leap Karia Chardonnay is excellent.
