Two services were held in his honor: a musical tribute on July 20, and his Homegoing Service on July 21.Both services took place at the ParamountTheatre inOakland,California. In the 30-plus years of his career, Hawkins created one of the most prolific and outstanding catalogs of hit gospel recordings and published songs.At the age of 19, Hawkins was singing in the Ephesians Church of God in Christ choir, which recorded the hit song “Oh Happy Day” directed by Hawkins’ older brother Edwin.
