The Calibrated Display Matching Service is typically done at the start of a project. "It matches our display to the characteristics of something else, like calibrating our monitor to match the specifications of and emulate perfectly a digital projection screen," says Admans. This service was performed for J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot during VFX creation for Star Trek Into Darkness. Dolby monitors at Bad Robot and at their VFX vendors were calibrated to match the digital screening room at Abrams' facility, saving time and money by ensuring that "everyone was looking at the same thing," he says. Admans likens Dolby's Advanced Display Calibration to "a facility tune-up" that's performed once or twice a year. It includes all the features of the Basic Display Calibration Service and implements Dolby software, which normalizes the entire backlight — a very complex process. "There are over 4.5K individual RGB LED elements in the backlight and each needs to be calibrated to the right level," Admans explains. "Our process addresses each LED to make sure it's working to factory specification to deliver a perfectly uniform backlight. I believe it's unique to Dolby to perform this process in the field and not at the factory." With its on-site servicing, Dolby aims to "minimize the amount of customer down time or time out for basic maintenance," Admans says. "We know that's time you can't bill for." FLANDERS SCIENTIFIC Flanders Scientific (www.flandersscientific.com), manufacturer of affordable broadcast monitors, integrates a wide variety of calibration options to suit customer needs and budgets. For customers who don't own calibration equipment, the company offers a send-in service: Customers pay to ship the monitors to Flanders Scientific, which then performs calibration with its equipment and LightSpace CMS at no charge. "The send-in service is available as often as a customer likes, for as long as they own our equipment — even outside the warranty period. That's especially valuable for smaller facilities," notes GM Bram Desmet. "A good part of our bread-and-butter business is customers with one or two monitors. Many of these customers can't afford to invest in high-end software and probes to do their own calibration." Frequency of calibration depends on the monitor model, he says. "White LED backlights tend to be very stable, so those monitors can go up to two years without significant changes, but RGB LED backlight monitors could need calibration every six months." Flanders Scientific also resells Minolta's Automated Alignment Kit, which provides a "plug-and-play solution" for customers, says Desmet. Now, Flanders Scientific also integrates with third-par ty calibration software, notably Light Illusion's LightSpace CMS and SpectraCal's CalMan, for DIY calibration at an advanced level. "We're seeking to expand options and integrate more with thirdpar ty solutions and probes," Desmet repor ts. "So whatever workflow you have for calibration, we can integrate with it. We're trying to accommodate everyone's preference." CSR - CUSTOMER SERVICE REP.
