From Illness to WEllness Health Fair N ew York Division members geared up for a healthy start to the summer when they attended the Healthcare Safetynet Committee’s “From Illness to WEllness” Health Fair on June 9. Tis three-tiered fair was made possible through the joint efforts of the National Healthcare Safetynet Committee, Co-Chair Cathy Lilly and the MOVE committee. An array of health specialists gave short seminars in the Leon Janney Boardroom. Te speakers covered a variety of body, mind and spirit topics, from the right nutrition for aging beautifully, to dealing with substance abuse, to using meditation as a means of stress relief and concentration. Jim Brown of Te Actors Fund gave a presentation about health care options in New York State under the new Health Care Reform legislation. Tere was also a moving speech given by Jenn Constantino, heart disease survivor, aspiring singer and outreach representative of the American Heart Association, about her own struggles with heart disease at a young age. Simultaneously, on the 12th floor attendees were able to sample a number of healing services from experts stationed at individual tables. Members could get a free eye exam at one table, and then move down the line for free ear seeds at the next table. Other services included chiropractic consultations, Reiki, and information about SAG P&H and yoga studios. New York Division Executive Director Jae Je Simmons was on hand throughout the day greeting members as they walked through the fair. She was pleased with the services offered at the fair, noting that, “Our members really appreciated the variety of information that was available at the health fair. Not only was there information about both traditional and alternative health care options, but members could also move between the provider tables in the 12th floor member lounge, and to the seminars, covering a wide range of topics, which were offered in the boardroom. In addition to a full spectrum of information, it was nice to have different ways for members to learn about their healthcare options.” Te third part of the day featured a special informational seminar, held in conjunction with the MOVE committee: “Yoga for Osteoporosis, Arthritis and Rotator Cuff Syndrome” with Dr. Loren Fishman, MD, a founding partner and director of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Te audience found Fishman engaging as he covered the latest research studies. Te members in attendance especially liked when a number of noninvasive techniques were shown to help strengthen bones and SAG FOUNDATION NY UPCOMING EVENTS!
