S locations across the nation, from the East Coast to Hawaii, with workshops tailored to “local needs.” As the conservatory’s “founding mother” and first chair Kathleen Freeman observed in 1981, “Te problems that actors have are not exactly the same in Hollywood and New York, San Francisco or Arizona, Boston or Chicago, and all Branches where professional actors live. People raise problems in the Branches that are indigenous to that area.” Conservatory memberships are available for a low cost — and T in some cases free — as a benefit of SAG membership. (Offered for educational purposes, workshops do not constitute an endorsement by SAG of any product, service or provider.) Here’s a look at current activities, whether conservatory or conservatory-inspired, happening across the country: Hollywood Tis conservatory offers members opportunities to hone and develop their craſt through acting classes, workshops, lectures and symposiums — with special sessions for young performers — all on the campus of the American Film Institute. Special guests such as casting directors, AFI alumni and fellow actors share their experience and advice. Conservatory members also have the amazing opportunity to be cast in AFI student films. More than 80 student and alumni films were cast this year with conservatory members. In late July, the conservatory’s 2010 summer seminar offered more than 50 different workshops and events for conservatory members. Te Deal: For only $25, any active Hollywood SAG member in good standing can take advantage of the three semesters worth of workshops that take place August through May on AFI’s campus as well as the summer seminar. New York Professional performers in New York expand their craſt and business knowledge learning from teachers and session directors (all experienced SAG members) who share their wealth of knowledge with conservatory members. Valuable skills and tips are shared through 15 weekly conservatory classes, audio/video workshops, private sessions at the Alice Mary Riley Studio and seminars. Topics include acting for commercials, teleprompter, improvisation, auditions, cold reading and more. Te Deal: With a season that runs September through August, New York Conservatory membership is a smart bargain for savvy SAG members at only $20 a year. HARPEN YOUR Skills he Screen Actors Guild Conservatory was launched in Hollywood more than 35 years ago, and is available in select Boston/New England Te most recent conservatory session here was an interactive demonstration of the use of improvisation techniques to enhance one’s career. Upcoming presentations and training sessions will support members and the growing New England film and television industries with instruction on topics such as marketing techniques, improving your craſt and the business side of performing. Additionally, casting directors are hosted several times annually to discuss topics pertinent to the New England market. Te Deal: Te conservatory season resumes in September and meets the first Monday of every month through June. Admission is only $10 per session. Chicago In conjunction with the Kauferr Members Resource Center, this conservatory offers a variety of workshops, seminars and special events to provide insight and training to help Chicago members on their career paths. Te conservatory and KMRC’s newest offering, Networking Night, is held 6-8 p.m. on the fourth Tursday of the month. Special guests are on hand to teach and lead a discussion about that month’s focus. Topics have ranged from what is effective networking, to the value of online social networking, to the importance of online casting services like iActor. Central Florida Sessions in this conservatory consist of weekly on-camera workshops in Casselberry limited to no more than three Guild members at a time. Tis allows for a more personal experience and is also helpful in preparing for auditions. Te Deal: No cost for local members. Colorado Te Colorado Branch Conservatory was re-established in 2009 with a premiere workshop featuring a commercial audition intensive on-camera session with Los Angeles casting director Mariko Ballentine. Classes will begin again in the fall with offerings on a quarterly basis. Topics being considered include a headshot/resume workshop, cold reading techniques and working in new media. Te Deal: Members are charged a nominal amount per event. Workshops are open to all local SAG.org
