Vintage of a Lifetime The 2009 Georges Duboeuf Cru Beaujolais Make History by Anthony Dias Blue WHETHER IT’S DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING or a mystical alignment of the stars is open to debate, but there’s no question that ideal, sunny weather in 2009 resulted in what Georges Duboeuf has called “the vintage of my lifetime” for his cru Beaujolais. When Duboeuf, the undisputed “king of Beaujolais,” came to the States with his son Franck earlier this year to present the wines, trade and press were treated to a taste of Gamay at its best. Says Duboeuf, “This vintage will be talked about for years to come.” I tasted through nearly all these releases recently and found them full of intensity, with great length and depth. Here are my notes. intense, rich and long. 89 88 and black raspberry fruit; crisp and balanced with spice and good length. Georges Duboeuf 2009 Morgon, France ($12) Lush and ripe with spice and smooth cherry fruit; balanced, rich and juicy with velvety texture and a long, dense finish. Georges Duboeuf 2009 Morgon Jean Descombes, France ($15) Spicy and ripe with tangy acidity and rich black-cherry fruit; bright, fresh and balanced with a long finish.
