READER FEEDBACK I enjoyed reading my fi rst issue (July 2010) of THE TASTING PANEL: nice articles, concise and easy to read. I have a com- ment for Anthony Head regarding his article “Finding Their Champion.” He states that Texas has a longer winemaking history than anywhere else in the country, dating back to the 1600s. Well, Florida would like to challenge Texas to an oldest wine-producing state smackdown. According to www. fl orida-agriculture.com, among other sources, our Florida Spaniards were making wine in St. Augustine in 1565, decades earlier than those Texas Spaniards were. Mexico might be able to lay claim to an older winemaking history than Florida, but not Texas. Keep up the nice work on THE TASTING PANEL; I look forward to the next issue. Sincerely, Eric Hemer, Educational Director, Master Sommelier SWS of Florida Anthony Head replies: I have done some further research, and Eric appears to be right, almost. The fi rst winemakers were, apparently, French Huguenot settlers, not Spaniards. But he’s right that American viticulture’s roots were fi rst planted in Florida not Texas. I’ll have more on the Texas-Florida wine connection in October’s Lone Star Life column. CORRECTIONS In last month’s Blue Reviews, the importer for the Wakefi eld 2007 Estate Shiraz was mistakenly listed; the importer is American Wine Distributors.
