N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 6 I 1 9 All of a Sudden - A Film from France, Japan, Germany & Belgium directed by Ryûsuke Hamagachi - Presented by the Eastern Region Special Projects Committee Marie-Lou, the director of a nursing home near Paris, strives for more humane elder care based on listening and respecting residents' dignity, despite resistance from part of her staff. She forms a deep supportive friendship with Mari, a Japanese theatre director facing terminal cancer and the two women join forces in a shared struggle to make the impossible possible. Drawing inspiration from a book of letters between a terminally ill philosopher and a medical anthropologist, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's (Drive My Car) new feature, All of a Sudden (Soudain), is a poignant drama about friendship, illness, art, and the responsibilities of care, creating a film that makes the world seem gentler, more open, and more humane. All of a Sudden had its world premiere in the main competition of the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
