Safety Bulletin: Safety Considerations
for the Prevention of Heat Illness
With the ever-increasing rise in temperatures, the DGA encourages
all members and studio/production personnel to familiarize
themselves with existing safety standards for the prevention of
heat illness/injury.
All efforts to prevent heat illness should conform to all applicable laws, rules,
and regulations. Moreover, every employer/production should have a Heat
Illness Prevention Plan, provide site-specific training to all employees and
supervisors, and implement emergency response procedures when necessary.
These requirements include ensuring cool-down areas, adequate hydration,
mandatory breaks, training, and hazard assessment, with additional state-specific rules such as California's 80°F trigger. If
there is a Safety Advisor on set, please reach out about their key role in ensuring applicable precautions are taken.
Be sure to follow all applicable laws, rules, and regulations in the jurisdiction where the production takes place. Heat illness
can be fatal. Because of the health risks, the symptoms of heat-related illness must be recognized. All Industry personnel have
legal and moral responsibility for safety on the set or wherever they may be working.
When it comes to safety, we all have a role to play. It is important that employees immediately report to the employer,
directly or through the employee's Supervisor, signs or symptoms of heat illness that they are experiencing or
observing in others.
Safety bulletins may be viewed or downloaded from the website www.csatf.org
In addition, the DGA is here to assist members with questions and concerns related to safety. The Guild's worldwide Safety
