S AG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland spoke at a private briefing hosted by the House Democratic Commission on AI and the Innovation Economy in Washington, D.C., on June 3. Crabtree-Ireland's presentation focused on the necessity of regulations and guardrails against the harmful and exploitative uses of AI, and advocated for the passage of the Nurture Originals, Foster Art and Keep Entertainment Safe, or NO FAKES, Act, which would prohibit nonconsensual uses of voice or likeness in audiovisual works and sound recordings. The presentation also announced the union's support of other federal bipartisan legislation that would ensure further transparency for creators whose work is used to train AI, including the Protecting Consumers from Deceptive AI Act; the Transparency and Responsibility for Artificial Intelligence Networks, or TRAIN, Act; and the Copyright Labeling and Ethical AI Reporting, or CLEAR, Act. If passed, these respective bills would establish technical standards and guidelines for generative AI content, help creators determine if their copyrighted work was used to train generative artificial intelligence by requiring training records for AI model developers, and implement additional guidelines to protect creators' intellectual property. "Acting, music, journalism, storytelling, broadcasting, voice performance and artistic expression are fundamentally human endeavors. If AI systems are allowed to train on, replicate and scale human performance without guardrails, consent or economic accountability, we risk discouraging future generations from pursuing creative careers at all. Our goal is to ensure that innovation develops with humans at the center," said Crabtree-Ireland at the conclusion of his presentation. SAG-AFTRA continues to prioritize and support guardrails for generative AI at the local, state and federal level. For more information, visit sagaftra.org/ai.
