M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 5 Welcome to Wavelength's Fall 2026 edition! Christina, Garrett, and the whole Wavelength crew have done it again! Please enjoy this novella of fantastic articles about the world of game sound and more! It's been a busy summer for the MPSE team. On July 6th, the Motion Picture Sound Editors opened the Vaughn International Film Festival, hosted by Antonio Ienco, with a 30th Anniversary Screening of Independence Day at the Hot Docs Theater in Toronto, Canada. The film was preceded by the world premiere of the MPSE's own Cinematic Promotional Piece—more on that in the ( hopefully) near future. Independence Day was received with a well-deserved raucous response from the audience acknowledging the absolutely fantastic sound editing and design of this cinematic classic. For the majority of the audience, this was their first time experiencing this film in a theater. After the screening, Supervising Sound Editor Val Kuklowsky, Sound Editor/Designer Mark Lanza, and Foley Artist Andy Malcolm held court under the inspiring supervision of moderator Timothy Muirhead. Many tricks of the trade, trials of the times, stories, and sonic easter eggs were explored during the conversation. Needless to say, the seats remained full to the bitter end. One week later, I represented the MPSE at the ICTA's (International Cinema Technology Association) Summer conference in Milwaukee, WI. The event offered great insight into the challenges faced by exhibitors around the world. Discussions included how technology is changing, how to better serve their clientele, and prognostications as to the future of theaters and the cinematic experience. The MPSE is actively looking to serve their mission of getting people in seats in those theaters! On July 24th, we held a sound gathering in New York City, hosted by Tom Ryan and Skyline Finishing. Attendees enjoyed delicious NY pizza, salad, beverages, and rousing conversations with colleagues and other industry professionals. And we had a special guest! Peter Albrechtsen was in town screening a new documentary he sound-designed, so we were fortunate to have him and his kids in attendance. As we move into fall, keep an eye out for information about a special Breaking Bad event with our friends at Sony, our MPSE Picnic, Sounding Board 6.0 (with the Cinema Audio Society), Game Sound Con, and more! As always, get out and live!
