124 M PS E . O R G we could add "handles" on the moved audio. We called this part of Titan the "fix-sync" function. Soon after, John Ellwood (our technical director) began adding in the autoconform, reconfom, and customizable EDL handling features as sound editors requested, which made it a "must-have" product for many sound departments for over 20 years. However, it might be amusing for some to know that the name Titan was actually a little "joke" based on the Fix-Sync function (that no one ever got) because we were "tightening" the conformed audio. Titan was awarded both the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Sci-Tech Award, and the Technical Emmy Award by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. JB: In looking back at the experience, my life path appears like the near- random travel of the ball in a pinball machine. You start going one direction gravity (=serious interest) pulls you, then an obstacle bounces you into a new path or some individual becomes your "flipper" where that encounter sends you off in a new direction, with a new pull. But over time, you inevitably encounter more surprising twists and turns as bouncers and flippers pop up. What's interesting in getting older, is that you can eventually start to see who, or what, the bounces and flippers were and when they happened. I also call them pivot points. Once I saw that pattern, say five to 10 years ago, I started making the effort to track down the relatively small number of individuals to thank for their career- changing impacts on my life. CM: Jeff's body of work in the field of digital audio processing is both groundbreaking and inspired many other developers who were able to get a real look into what digital signal processing could do for our work in film, and other audio production. His products have made our workflows significantly more efficient and allowed sound editors to do sonic magic and alchemy with dialogue most specifically, that would have been the stuff of dreams when we worked on film and tape.
