LOCAL706.ORG • 63 Terrell Baliel (1952–2026) JOURNEYMAN HAIR STYLIST With his longtime best friend, Craig Tapella by his side, our friend and colleague Terry Baliel passed away on the morning of April 25, 2026. A member of Locals 706 & 70, and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. We would like to recognize his brilliant career as a legendary hair stylist in ALL aspects. Starting his journey in the Bay Area doing opera, ballet, theater, television, and feature films with a level of talent and knowledge that was unsurpassed. In 1987, he became a member of Local 706 and made the move to Los Angeles. He went on to be nominated many times and received three Emmy Awards, several Guild Awards, and deservedly, the Makeup & Hair Stylists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. Through his career, Terry also worked alongside A-list stylists Jan Alexander ( The Prestige, Inception), Carol Pershing (Deadwood), and Gail Ryan (The Grinch That Stole Christmas), Carol O'Connell (Jersey Boys), to name a few. Some will recall seeing the cover of The Artisan for his beautiful work on Helena Bonham Carter for Alice in Wonderland, wow! Many of us had the good fortune to work on Terry's team, and we felt honored to be asked. He made hair styling look effortless as his hands would glide into a masterpiece. His quick wit and hilarious sarcasm inspired you to do your best work. He was a mentor to many. It has often been said by some that when they found them-selves perplexed by a difficult hair design, they would consider: What would Terry do? Undoubtedly, his lessons and techniques will be passed on throughout generations. Not only hair styling, but everything Terry did was beautiful, be it his cooking, gardening, or home decor, and especially Christmas! Let's share our "Tales of Terry," and there are many! Be grateful for all he brought to each of us as hair stylists and make-up artists, and to our industry. A Legend! In remembrance of a good life well-lived and all the laughter too! EXTENDED FAMILY NEWS Brent Keene (1965–2026) HAIR STYLIST TRAINEE The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, Local 706, remembers Brent Keene, who joined the Guild in May 2003 as a hair stylist. Throughout his career, Brent contributed his talents to a variety of television and film productions, including My Fair Brady, JAG, Mr. Personality, The Mentalist, American Housewife, Baskets, and Rim of the World. He also enjoyed day-playing on numerous productions, including The Orville, Ford v Ferrari, Thor: Love and Thunder, and America's Next Top Model. Brent appreciated the opportunity to work with different crews, meet new people, and share his hair styling skills wherever his career took him. Brent had a creative spirit and was known for his imaginative, avant-garde hair styling. Under the name "KeeneKreations," he embraced artistic expression and enjoyed creating bold and unique looks that reflected his vision and passion for the craft. Above all, Brent loved his family. One of the chapters of his life that brought him great pride was the time he spent in Arizona caring for his mother during her illness. While there, he worked in a wig store where he found deep meaning in helping individuals experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatments. Being able to provide comfort, confidence, and compassion to those facing difficult circumstances was an experience he treasured. Brent also loved living near the beach and appreciated the peace and inspiration that came from the ocean. Those who crossed paths with Brent are unlikely to forget him. He brought his own distinctive personality and creative energy wherever he went, leaving behind memories that will remain with the many people who knew him throughout his life and career. Local 706 extends its heartfelt condolences to Brent's family, friends, and all who knew and cared for him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him. David Larson (1958–2026) JOURNEYMAN HAIR STYLIST David was truly a gifted and dedicated hair stylist whose passion for his craft spanned decades, leaving a lasting mark on the industry and on his many colleagues. David held cosmetology licenses in both New York and California, and became a valued member of Local 706, joining as an Associate in May 2001. He advanced to Trainee in September 2004 and achieved Journeyman status in April 2006. This progression reflected his continued growth, exceptional skill, and unwavering commitment to his profession. David had a passion for period work, and was highly skilled in wig making, ventilating, wig design, and historical period research. Known for his keen eye for detail and his willingness to embrace any challenge, David was a quick learner who constantly sought new ways to express his creativity through both his professional work and personal pursuits. He was always learning, always creating, and always finding new ways to expand his talents. He took great pride in his craft and cherished opportunities to connect with fellow members, whether participating in craft fairs at Local 80, or visiting colleagues or the Local 706 office. David also enjoyed sharing his humor and personality on social media. He was often among the first to stand up for his Local and advocate for his union, and his love for IATSE Local 706 and the labor movement was evident to everyone who knew him. A firm believer in continuing education and professional growth, David proudly served multiple terms on the Board of Trustees, contributing his knowledge, experience, and dedication to the union community he cared so deeply about. David's extraordinary talent earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his hair styling work on iCarly. His impressive film and television credits include Star Trek, Dreamgirls, Star Trek: Picard, Perry Mason, 9-1-1, American Horror Story, Teen Wolf, True Blood, CSI: Miami, House, and many others. David J. Larson will be remembered for his extraordinary creativity, unwavering dedication, generous spirit, quick wit, and lifelong love of learning and artistry. His legacy lives on through the remarkable work he created, the knowledge he shared, the members he mentored, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career. Our deepest condolences go out to David's family, friends, loved ones, and all who had the honor of knowing and working with him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
