40 • THE ARTISAN FALL 2026 PHOTOS COURTESY OF NETFLIX THE GLOBAL APPEAL OF MAN ON FIRE L to R: Bobby Cannavale as Paul Rayburn and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy I n an uncertain time for so many, I feel very fortunate to have been a part of Netflix's seven-part limited series Man on Fire which began airing April 2026. Happily, I received a call from longtime friend, producer Ed McDonnell. Our working relationship more than 25 years goes back to Three Kings in 1998, through Prisoners (2012), and Sicario (2015). I was relieved to receive his call during a very quiet time. Ed had pitched me for the show, and I am forever grateful for his trust and support. Yahya Abul Mateen II as star and producer, also had approval on HOD make-up. I was delighted that he also approved having me on. I was entrusted to build a team of make-up, hair, and special effects artists between Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro. Having worked in Mexico previously and admiring so many great Mexican filmmakers and artisans, this was sure to be another great adventure. Key make-up was Karla Duneas Canterell, who often partners with key hair Claudia Farfan. Rounding out our full team was make-up artist Ilse Vargas Villasenor and hair stylist Laura Callejas (whom I nicknamed the French Sisters as they shared a resemblance with their dark hair worn in similar style to characters in a French film I saw years before). I also hired a frequent daily make-up artist and hair stylist, the charming Denia Luna. B Y D O N A L D M O W A T M A K E - U P D E S I G N E R Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
