also brought in forty period cars into our color palette, using them to help choreograph the shootout sequence. Also, Upstate, we found an ageing mechanic shop and transformed it into an isolated gas station. Inspired by European gas stations from the time, we created custom neon elements and signage, brought in gas pumps and background cars, painted and filled the interior with period- appropriate packaging, auto parts, and practical lighting, and gave it an otherworldly feel. Post-Production Since working with Catherine Martin and Baz Luhrmann, for whom design and world-building are central to a project, I have always recognized the need for our input as designers to extend beyond production, especially because much of the wider world we envisioned during prep is realized in post. Unfortunately, as is always the case, we simply didn't have the time in prep and production to complete all the detailed world-building, so I worked with a small Art Department to develop the wider environments to pass on to the VFX houses. Also, as part of the post team, I attended shot reviews and design meetings and collaborated with Maggie and the post team on fonts, titles and some 3D VFX. I want to acknowledge the extremely talented New York art, construction, scenic, set decorating and prop crew, not all mentioned here, who contributed their skill and hard work to creating the world of The Bride!. They were all in, no matter how many layers of posters or ageing washes were required, how many surfaces we wanted to tile, or how quickly we had to pivot to building the Times Square backlot set.
