The Guild's dedication to ensuring the human element stays at the center of the creative process centers on fair compensation, recognition and consent for the use of a designer's creative process. The rapid advancements in the abilities of generative AI should not become a replacement for the work of Art Directors, Graphic Artists, Illustrators, Production Designers, Scenic Artists, Set Designers and other talented union professionals. Generative AI has absorbed huge swaths of copyrighted work, some it likely from our own community of artists, (There is really no way to know!) which is then used without consent, credit, compensation or transparency. Advancements in generative AI output do not supercede any juristictions outlined in the IATSE Basic Agreement, and should never be used to replace work that should be done by a union craft member. The ADG advocates the following four items as priorities for addressing the use of generative AI in the entertainment industry: -Guardrails for Our Economy. Guardrails are urgently needed around the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace to ensure that technology is harnessed and used as a tool and does not replace the human element in the creative process. -Full Transparency. Copyrighted material should never be used to train generative AI, without complete, transparent copyright holder approval, and appropriate copyright holder compensation. -Maintaining Good Jobs. AI should only be used by artists and designers as a tool they choose to help complete tasks and should never be used to displace those artists and designers. -Maintaining Union Jurisdiction. Any job utilizing AI for a task that is within the jurisdiction of a particular union craft should be done by a member of that union craft. ADG members are asked to report any AI use on productions, current production AI policies and any request to use AI to the ADG office. info@adg.org ยท 818 762-9995 TO ILLUSTRATE THIS PAGE, THREE AI IMAGE SITES WERE ASKED TO CREATE AN IMAGE FOR A MAGAZINE ARTICLE TITLED "THE USE OF AI IMAGERY IN PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR TV AND FILM."
