The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and reflections on all aspects of the creative process in film, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection. AD/UPM Cheryl Downey The 1999 Frank Capra Achievement Award recipient discusses her time in the AD Training Program, her experience as one of the first women Assistant Directors, and her Guild service. Downey's advice to her fellow ADs and UPMs: "You must network. That's one of the hardest parts of the job for me, picking up the phone and staying in touch, but it's essential. You should have 'Plan B', but make sure that you have in your mind who you need to help, what department will be most affected by your change and involve them in the discussion. So, maybe it'll be 'Plan C.' Remember, good ideas come from anybody on the Crew. Wally [Wallace Worsley Jr.] had suggested that I save up six months of my expenses so that I wouldn't panic when a strike or something like what's happening right now in the industry comes up. Jog or do yoga. Do something that is going to help you withstand the inevitable rejection. And remember that gratitude is underrated and humor is essential. And I'd encourage you to get involved with the Guild. Our Guild is big now, but the Councils are the same size. You'll bring your gifts to the Guild. We need them. A saying that I always found fascinating and thought applied to me was, 'Nevertheless, she persisted.' So, I say to you, persist."
