LMGI COMPASS | Spring 2026 • 15 "Inside Location Management" A Royal Television Society— LMGI Panel Discussion "Don't show something unserviceable. If it's under a flight path—don't show it. They will fall in love with it, and you will be in for a world of pain." SLM Martin Walker's advice drew a knowing laugh from the room, but it landed because it was true. Location management is not just about finding somewhere visually exciting: It is about knowing whether it can actually work. That tension sat at the center of "Inside Location Management," a panel event held at Everyman King's Cross in London this March and organized jointly by the LMGI's UKEA Committee and the Royal Television Society for RTS members. The evening focused on the real mechanics of the job: how locations are identified, pitched and secured, and how creative ambition is continually tested against access, budget, time and the practical demands of production. The panel brought together four supervising location managers with credits spanning the full range of by Angus Ledgerwood/LMGI contemporary UK film and television. LMGI member Dee Gregson's credits include Speak No Evil and Alex Rider; Tom Howard/ LMGI is known for The Night Manager (S1) and A Monster Calls; LMGI member Martin Walker's work includes Bird and Amandaland; and Poppy Gordon-Clark's credits include Poldark and Down Cemetery Road. Between them, the panelists' work encompasses studio features, high-end television and some of the most location- dependent productions of the last decade. The discussion reflected that breadth. The UKEA Committee's collaboration with the RTS formed part of a broader effort to raise the standing of location professionals across the UK and Europe. For the committee, the evening demonstrated the purpose of these partnerships: positioning location management where it belongs—at the center of the conversation about how screen storytelling is made.
