50 • THE ARTISAN SUMMER 2026 raised not far from Plainfield in a small town called Rockbridge, Wisconsin, and kindly sent me polaroids and stories that helped bring these characters to life with another level of authenticity. What was your collaboration with other department heads like? Were there any insights they brought to the production that helped inspire you or vice versa? Every period project requires a huge collaborative effort between all departments, but this was the first time in my career where my closest collaboration was with our SFX team. Because of the graphic nature of this show and the heavy involvement of SFX, we were tasked with building multiple wigs for each character, but also for the stunt doubles & MUFX mannequins created in each character's likeness. This required extremely close collaboration with Dave Anderson and his amazing team to make sure he had the necessary wigs and bulk hair for each MUFX build. We were constantly chasing deadlines and daily communication was key. Dave is honestly a legend in this industry, and his work speaks for itself. I learned so much working with him and I'm grateful we had the opportunity to collaborate. We see Ed evolve and age throughout the show. What was it like working so closely with Charlie Hunnam on this character? From our very first conversation, Charlie was all in and very collaborative. An actor's input is crucial to the success of any design and without it, you're really missing out on some inside information. So much of my work is informed directly by conversations I have with the actors. On this project, Ed's haircut was our starting point and through discussions with Ryan and Charlie, we decided to keep his look consistent throughout. Equal parts matinee idol and SS soldier, he was always impeccably groomed, with a fresh cut. This helped to sell the duality that existed within Ed, kind and generous to everyone he met in town, but a monster to those who fell victim to his hand. In the later part of the series, we start to see Ed get older, both in his face and in the progression of his hair color. There were two custom pieces that were built by Studio Pickens to help us with this color shift. The first phase was a hairline piece that enhanced the natural gray in Charlie's hair and for the second phase, a topper piece helped to shift his gray level to 75%.
