50 M PS E . O R G Remembering ST E V E M A S L OW (1944 - 2026) This past April, we lost Steve Maslow—an Oscar-winning rerecording mixer whose work helped define the sound of modern cinema. For many of us, Steve wasn't just a name in the credits. He was a presence. You could spot him a mile away. Just look for the hair. Steve's legendary Afro made him instantly recognizable—a kind of dark halo that gave him a silhouette you didn't forget, equal parts rock-and- roll and unmistakably his own. And because Steve came to film sound through music, and he never lost that sensibility. Born in Los Angeles in 1944 and raised in the San Fernando Valley, Steve's path into the industry wasn't the traditional one. In the late 1960s, he was working as a roadie, touring with the Strawberry Alarm Clock, whose hit "Incense and Peppermints" captured the era. He eventually found his way into recording studios, becoming a music engineer and working on commercial recordings. He collaborated with a range of artists, including Frankie Valli BY STEVE LEE L-R: Gregg Landaker, Steve Maslow, Bill Varney.
