M OT I O N P I CTU R E S O U N D E D I TO R S 49 Because of that, I believe we have a responsibility not only to do excellent work individually, but to advocate for each other collectively. That advocacy can happen at many levels. It can mean supporting your crew publicly on the dub stage. It can mean recognizing the contributions of assistants and editors in front of supervisors and filmmakers. It can mean creating healthy, collaborative environments in edit bays and mix rooms where people feel respected and creatively empowered. It can mean mentoring younger artists, connecting people to opportunities, or simply being generous about giving shine to the people around you. I would not be where I am without people who shared knowledge with me, opened doors for me, advocated for me, and welcomed me into this community before I fully believed I belonged in it myself. I think we owe that same generosity to the next generation and to each other. Our industry is changing rapidly through shifting economics, globalization, evolving distribution models, new technology, and AI. Those changes affect editors, mixers, assistants, and creators alike. I believe now more than ever we need to resist the instinct to respond to ego and a sense of scarcity and instead strengthen our ties to community through mentorship, participation, advocacy, and collaboration. We have to be active citizens of this industry if we are to survive. Support each other. Protect each other's contributions. Advocate for the value of editorial and mixing work in the rooms where decisions are being made. Stay involved in the organizations and communities that strengthen the craft and protect the people who make it possible. Be informed politically. Vote. The strongest moments of my career have always come through community, collaboration, mentorship, and generosity. I hope to continue giving back to this craft and this community for the rest of my career … where I am just getting started.
