more. I think you shouldn't be in this business if, on the days you're not getting paid, you're not doing this anyway. It probably means you don't live it and love it. I love the space of being alone with headphones and hearing a cool sound. I love editing stuff that I have no business editing, because I want to try new skills; learn a new plugin because it's fun, because this is who I am. SSS: Yes, if you love the business. MM: You have pride in what you do. SSS: Right? So, it never worked out that way. MM: Ah, yes, maybe we might have to cut that out. [Laughing] SSS: All right, so in conclusion, it really shows a lot of success because of our failures. Not everybody has that story, as you know, with the kids in the streets and those who don't have parents and who have these horrible stories. You never hear about the good guys; you never hear about the winners. You never hear about the achievers. You only hear the bad stuff. You know, like in the news, and so it's very refreshing to know that you can have failures and succeed at what you love and what you do. MM: That shouldn't be an epiphany for anyone, but you make it sound like this is a new idea. This is as old as the ages, isn't it? SSS: Yes, but it's just a statement to acknowledge you and what you've done and your achievements and how amazing you are, and that you did experience failures, and they did lead you in the right direction. MM: You know, if there's a way to sum it up, if that's what we're doing, I would frame it with this idea; I'm human, just like everybody else. I'm frail, I make mistakes. I have successes. I just had this discussion with my son the other day. We were talking about how uncomfortable parties are. You know, you go to a cocktail party with a bunch of new people, and you feel stuck in a little group, and you make dumb chitchat. He said to me, "Dad, it's just so awkward. I hate making small talk. I hate not saying meaningful things." And I said, "Well, Rio, what you might need to understand is it's supposed to be awkward. It's never not awkward. It's the human condition. You meet somebody you don't know, you test the waters with an idea, maybe it doesn't land, and you feel weird, and then they try something, and there's this little dance going on, and you must know that they're feeling just as awkward as you do. But we never say it out loud. We just say facile things, until at some point you've had a cocktail, you get to know each other, and now the conversation starts to get interesting, but there will never be a moment in human history when at a party's conversation with people you don't know isn't awkward. We're human, just get used to it, accept it, laugh about it." SSS: No one ever says it. "Oh, wow, this is really awkward." MM: Yes, sometimes you've just got to call it out. "Oh, isn't this awkward? We're just saying the dumbest things, aren't we?" Then you break the ice, right? Just admit it. Just get human. SSS: Well, that's a great statement to make, overall, is "get human." MM: Now even to put a topper on top of that, "Get human is the antidote to AI." SSS: Oh, do we want to talk about AI? MM: I mean, it's the one thing that AI doesn't have, is humanity, right? It has a semblance of humanity because it's an aggregation and approximation of everything that is representational of humanity, but it will never have an original human idea.
