CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY 62ND CAS AWARDS | 7 A N N U A L C A S A W A R D S 62 ND A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I offer my congratulations to all our distiguished nominees representing fantastic projects and great sound work, with a special moment of appreciation for our Student Recognition Award finalists. I have been fortunate to run into previous winners who are now successfully working in our field. All of tonight's finalists have a great future ahead and have risen above an exceptional group of talented individuals to be finalists and here with us tonight. We are incredibly proud to be welcoming filmmaker Guillermo del Toro back to our stage this evening. Guillermo is no stranger to our show, and it really is a joy to be celebrating achievements of such a visionary filmmaker. I am looking forward to seeing him receive tonight's Filmmaker honor. I am delighted to see my long-term collaborator and friend receiving tonight's CAS Career Achievement Award. Skip Lievsay and I share a decades-long history of the same projects and being part of the same creative teams while we somehow never worked together for even one day! (If you don't count set and mix stage visits, which I actually do.) But tonight holds a bittersweet place for many in the room, including myself. Along with the presentations above, tonight we will bestow an award in the name of our friend, Jeff Wexler. Jeff contributed so much to many advancements in how we work, was a major CAS supporter, Board member, and volunteer, and helped many of us personally as we navigated our careers. Without Jeff, I would never have been able to do much of the work I did successfully. The inaugural recipients will already be known to many of you for their huge contribution to modern sound recording and mixing. I am thrilled that we get to show our appreciation. Jeff was a big part of the creation of this award and so the Jeffrey S. Wexler Award will continue to be a lovely honor for us to bestow in his memory for years to come. This has been a fun year with many enjoyable events, from our annual picnic and membership meetings to gatherings across the US and beyond. As we continue to grow as an organization, our ability to engage with many different communities continues to grow. I would like to invite every member here this evening to be more involved. As I enter my final year as the CAS President, one of my aims is to get out to more cities and countries and continue to expand those gatherings and participation. Let us know about your sound community-related event ideas and we can try to work with you to make them a reality. As is tradition, tonight we will present our new CAS Board members. I look forward to working with both the newly elected members and those who have been faithfully and tirelessly serving for, in many cases, a long time. Thank you to all of them. Finally, in a difficult year, I appreciate all the attendees tonight for making the effort to show up to honor the fine work from this year and the people who continue to move our field forward. I hope to speak to as many of you as possible in our post-awards reception. Free ice cream. Peter Kurland CAS President I Cinema Audio Society WELCOME TO THE 62nd ANNUAL CAS AWARDS!
