American singer/songwriter Mitski delivered a set of phenomenal live performances during the tour for her 2024 album, "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We." Night a†er night, she kept hundreds of thousands of fans rapt with her musical prowess and expressive choreography set against a stark stage design and visual elements ranging from striking minimalism to a verdant, dreamlike spectacle. Concert film "Mitski: The Land," directed by Grant James, translates the magic of Mitski's sweeping live performances into an intimate, cinematic narrative, with editing by Ben Montez and grading by Brandon Thomas, both of TBD Post, using DaVinci Resolve Studio. Supported by DaVinci Resolve Studio's integrated toolset, including editing, color grading and VFX, Montez and Thomas collaborated as a creative team across different departments, with Thomas noting, "Seeing what we were able to pull off inside Resolve with editorial and color/finishing happening within the same timeline was a highlight of this project. We found editing solutions within color and color grading solutions via the edit." A•er initially laying down the first assembly, Montez and James worked closely together to elevate key moments of Mitski's performance, heightening the emotional impact and fully bringing the stage experience to life on screen. "DaVinci Resolve Studio's Fusion page, VFX in the edit timeline and VFX in the color page were all critical to that process," Montez explained. "One of the first techniques we landed on was a combination of effects in the Fusion page to achieve a step print effect, essentially slowing the video down to play at four to six frames per second while giving the image a ghostly, ethereal quality.
