With modern tools, we can enhance clarity and correct flaws that distract modern listeners. Michael Babcock explains, "We restore films to how people remember they sounded, not how they actually sounded." When the original filmmakers are involved, the rules change. Some prefer to preserve the original experience, while others see restoration as an opportunity to fix regrets, add missing elements, and modernize. But without the filmmaker's input, the engineers become the historians, and the approach leans more into creative restraint. Preservation begins with the transfer, not the restoration tools. Finding the best sources is often the most difficult part. Assets may be mislabeled, deteriorated, incomplete, or missing documentation, and sourcing the correct playback hardware can be a challenge. Ironically, early digital formats from the late 1990s (e.g., MO discs, AIT tapes, and proprietary systems) often present larger obstacles than analog elements from the 1950s. In many cases, the hardware still exists, but can't be mounted, lacks metadata, or relies on unknown encodings. The transfer is a craft itself. Nicholas Bergh explains that incorrect settings can distort entire transfers, especially EQ curves for analog mag. "Each studio had different ideas about what EQ curves should be used on their machines. Without recreating the exact playback conditions, transfers can sound completely wrong." Re-transferring legacy audio with modern playback chains can result in significant quality improvements. While iZotope RX has long been a cornerstone of restoration work, newer AI-based tools such as Ian Sampson's Hush and Accentize dxRevive were discussed as powerful but imperfect. These tools can perform remarkable voice separation and noise reduction, but when used carelessly, they can also remove dialogue, erase Foley, flatten ambiences, and destroy texture that subconsciously supports the story. Human judgment remains critical. Ultimately, restoration is part technological archeology and creative interpretation. When considering how much to modernize the soundtrack fidelity, Michael Babcock shares, "It's a gut check, really. It's such an unscientific answer, but it's a sensibility. You have to know the movie, know what they were going for, and sometimes just make a decision." Since restoration is not inexpensive, economics play a big role. Release strategy drives everything. Doug Mountain explains, "The primary market is usually streaming or home video, but in more recent years, they've found that theatrical re-releasing of a movie is also generating a fair amount of revenue." Purists want authenticity, home theater owners want spectacle, and studios want resale value. So, the question becomes, "Are we restoring for history—or revenue?" Studios must evaluate audience demand, format relevance, and long-term monetization potential. But as this panel demonstrated, when done properly, audio restoration is not simply a technical exercise, it's an act of cultural stewardship. " It's a gut check, really.
