8 • THE ARTISAN SPRING 2026 GUILD NEWS Emmy-nominated make-up artist Michael Johnston will receive the prestigious Vanguard Award at the 13th Annual MUAHS Guild Awards. e gala event will take place February 14, 2026, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Johnston is a pioneering force in children's and teen television, with more than 30 years of experience shaping the visual identity of some of Nickelodeon's most iconic shows. From whimsical designs to trend- setting styles, his artistry has defined generations of kids' entertainment. Johnston's credits include beloved series such as All at, e Amanda Show, Zoey 101, Henry Danger, iCarly, Victorious, Drake & Josh, Sam & Cat, Danger Force, Game Shakers, and e Fairly OddParents, as well as the All at reboot. Johnston also headed 2 0 2 6 V A N G U A R D A W A R D MICHAEL JOHNSTON | MAKE-UP ARTIST the make-up department for the Kids' Choice Awards for six years. roughout his career, Johnston has helped launch the careers of stars, including Ariana Grande, with whom he traveled for eight years, and her brother Frankie Grande. Other notable names include Kenan ompson, Nick Cannon, Jamie Lynn Spears, Miranda Cosgrove, Drake Bell, Jace Norman, and Amanda Bynes. His artistry has earned him three Primetime Emmy nominations, two Children's and Family Emmy Award nominations, and numerous honors from the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, including an Outstanding Artisan Award. In total, Johnston has achieved 12 wins and 19 nominations. He currently serves as Chairman of the Rules and Regulations Committee for the MUAHS Awards. In Memoriam Karen Scales (1956-2025) MAKE-UP ARTIST Karen Scales' talent, warmth, and generous spirit left a lasting mark on the productions she touched and the people fortunate enough to know her. Karen joined Local 706 in February 1993 as a hair stylist, bringing with her exceptional skill, professionalism, and a deep dedication to her craft. In August 1996, she expanded her artistry into make-up, continuing to contribute beautifully and consistently to the entertainment community. She especially cherished her time working with Bonnie Hunt, serving as her personal stylist on Cheaper by the Dozen and Life with Bonnie. Karen also contributed her artistry to projects, including Sapphire Man, Stepfather 3, Heart of the Deal, The Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen, and Richard Jeni: Platypus Man. Throughout her career, Karen was known not only for her creative eye but for her quiet commitment, reliability, and the kindness she extended to everyone around her. Beyond her professional life, Karen was funny, compassionate, and unfailingly respectful. She treated everyone with kindness and had a remarkable ability to see the positive side of any situation. Her love of music was one of her brightest joys; she found happiness in playing piano, singing, and playing guitar, often sharing her musical light with those close to her. Karen took an Honorable Withdrawal in May 2006 and later moved to Utah to be with her sister, Shellee Richardson, beginning a new chapter surrounded by family support. She is survived by her daughter, Olivia Weiner, whom she loved deeply. Her artistry, warmth, and enduring light will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
