The mother of actor Laura Dern, Ladd appeared in more than 200 films and television shows and received three Academy Award nominations. In 1981, she won a Golden Globe for her role in the sitcom Alice. Ladd joined both SAG and AFTRA in 1956. She was first elected to the SAG National Board in 1982, serving a two-year term. She returned to union service in 2001 and went on to serve for more than two decades, through 2023, as a National Board member and as a member or vice chair of several national committees. In 2025, Ladd received the Ralph Morgan Award in recognition of her outstanding service. Named in honor of Ralph Morgan, the first president of the Screen Actors Guild, the award recognizes catalysts for positive change — those who embody the spirit of volunteerism and inspire others to join the fight for better wages and working conditions. On Nov. 6, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, in conjunction with Ladd's family, established the Diane Ladd Fund in her honor. The Fund provides critical health assistance to SAG-AFTRA members in urgent need.
