S A G A F T R A .O R G S AG - A F T R A S PEC I A L IS S U E 2 0 26 22 The union requires studios to provide accessible FYC digital screeners during the final phase of voting, with either closed captioning (CC) or subtitles for those who are deaf or hard of hearing (SDH), and audio descriptions (AD) for those who are blind or low vision, where you can hear the action happening onscreen between the dialogue — it's like turning an FYC screener into an audiobook! HOW TO ACCESS THESE FEATURES Information from the streaming services and studios on how to access their closed captioning and audio description is now available online via The Actor Awards' official website. Digital screeners became available to eligible voting members on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and remain accessible throughout the final voting period. The Netflix livestream of the 32nd awards ceremony on Sunday, March 1, will also feature closed captioning and live audio description. Visit actorawards.org/accessibility for more information. WHAT IS CLOSED CAPTIONING? Closed captioning (CC) creates a real-time transcript of dialogue and sound for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. SAG-AFTRA has required closed captioning on all FYC digital screeners since 2017. WHAT IS AUDIO DESCRIPTION? Audio description (AD) is off-screen narration that describes the onscreen action as well as facial expressions and other visual details to enhance the viewing experience for those who are blind or low vision. SAG-AFTRA has required audio description on all FYC digital screeners since 2021. These powerful tools are designed to help make films, television and streaming shows more accessible to our members and the wider public with disabilities.
