F E B R U A R Y 2 0 2 6 I 5 3 On December 16, the Disability Committee (DC) meeting featured the conversation, Empowering Disabled Artists – The Creation and Foundations of the Disability Committee, with Director Jenni Gold. During a conversation moderated by DC Alternate Co-Chair Matthew O'Shea, Gold discussed the formation of the Disability Committee, her experiences navigating the industry early on in her career, and the impact of her groundbreaking documentary, Cinemability: The Art of Inclusion. Gold revealed the challenges of breaking into the industry as a filmmaker and the need for anyone who wants a career in this industry to live and breathe this work. She spoke about the challenges of balancing multiple projects — noting the importance of always having multiple irons in the fire because you never know what the outcome of a project will be or how long it will take to make. She also shared insight on her directing process and how she continues to champion inclusion on and off the screen. Gold also noted the continuous advocacy needed to further the creation of an entertainment culture where all members are able to be accommodated without studios immediately assuming inclusion is an added financial cost. She encouraged members to really engage with the work of the DGA Disability Committee as not just a space for community but also a space for lifting up issues being faced by members with disabilities on set and while seeking out employment. In addition to Cinemability: The Art of Inclusion, Gold's directorial credits include the feature, Ready, Willing & Able; and the short films Shadow of Death, Dumpster Diving and SPF 1000. She has been a DGA member since 1997 and serves as a member of the Disability Committee." L-R: Director Jenni Gold and Disability Committee Alternate Co-Chair Matthew O'Shea (moderator). Thomas Carter interviewed by Eric Laneuville Director Thomas Carter discusses his experiences in film and television directing, how he works to deepen the characters of his helmed projects, and the Guild advances he's helped usher in through his service. Carter on creating an iconic scene for the pilot episode of Miami Vice: "I devised an elaborate sequence to [show Crockett's betrayal]. It was a simple sequence — but using 'In the Air Tonight,' using music and montage, creating images of Crockett and Tubbs driving to the next moment in the film, but him having to stop at a phone booth and make a phone call to [his ex wife] and get that reassurance — it's only then that he can really move forward and continue with the plot. And so I created that by sending the crew out various nights. I'd scouted some streets and they'd go down this street and that street and shoot all these angles of the car. I later shot Philip [Michael Thomas (Tubbs)] and Don [Johnson (Crockett)], and all these mesmerizing images, so that it would be very seductive, very quiet, almost no sound in it. In the beginning the car is driving, you don't even hear it, you just hear Philip cocking the gun. But you don't really hear much. You just hear the music. The idea was to be inside the heads of those guys. That show was a great opportunity for me to experiment with the elements of filmmaking and to take on the mantle of being a storyteller." The DGA's Visual History Program website contains hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews with Directors and Director's team members discussing their careers and reflections on all aspects of the creative process in film, television and other media. These interviews are indexed for quick retrieval of segments pertaining to specific topics of interest within a particular interview or across the entire collection.
