32 PROP CULTURE I WINTER 2026 The MacGuffin that beats at the heart of the film is the "Dead Man's Chest" itself—locked away with Davy Jones' own, a weathered relic of unknown origin, its secrets buried deeper than any pirate's hoard, yet steering the course of every soul on screen. In Dead Man's Chest, every goal, betrayal, reversal, and chase is charted toward this singular destination: the Dead Man's Chest. The titular chest hides Davy Jones' heart, a MacGuffin—a term coined by Angus MacPhail, mastered by Hitchcock as a mere plot device, and recast by George Lucas in saying, "The audience should care about [the MacGuffin] almost as much as the dueling heroes and villains on-screen"—forever chained in the ribcage of cinematic history. The chest embodies sacrifice and desire: Will caught between Elizabeth and his father; Elizabeth torn by Jack's fate yet longing to wed Will; and Jack Sparrow, forever bargaining with destiny, caught between self-preservation, the Kraken, and the pirate's code.
