DOUGLAS HARLOCKER: The answer to that is a tricky and often misunderstood one and can be perceived as arrogant. We work independently of the art department in many ways. The production designer provides beautiful concept art. The costume designer provides beautiful costumes. They guide us in the language and color way of the movie. Denis Villeneuve, as does Spielberg, Barry Sonnefeld, Sam Raimi, Peter Weir, and Tim Burton, actually every director I have worked with in the past 25 years, preferred to work one-on-one with the Property Master. The minutiae of what is needed is so specific to the action and personalized/tailored to the actor that if filtered through the art department , it would be overwhelming. Dune: Part Two Douglas Harlocker, PMG PROP CULTURE: How did you approach the project and its preparation? DOUGLAS HARLOCKER: It is world building. There was a mandate not to get or adapt anything off the shelf. Very strict about IP so we would dig deep online to see if singular elements could help inspire a design without actually using any aspect of the research. It created an open conceptual dialogue less visual at that stage than philosophical leading the charge.
